An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale on Sunday jolted the town of Mourmouri in Iran’s western Ilam Province bordering Khuzestan and Lorestan provinces.

There was no report of likely casualties or damages, according to IRNA. This is the second time Mourmouri has been struck over the past six months. In September, a relatively powerful tremor of magnitude 4.5 Richter rattled the city, but no casualties or damages were reported.

Iran straddles several major seismic faults and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent times hit Bam in Kerman Province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city’s ancient mud-built citadel.
