Nearly 34,000 villages are today deserted due to unemployment and inequitable distribution of services, and the rural population has decreased by 7% since 2004 from 33% to the current 26% following large-scale migration of people to urban areas in search of jobs, said Seyed Abolfazl Razavi, deputy first vice-president for rural development and deprived areas. This has caused 10 million hectares of agricultural lands to be left fallow, IRNA quoted him as saying. At present, there are 63,000 villages in the country. Around 70% of them have access to asphalted roads and 58% to piped gas network. Development of the processing industry in rural areas can help prevent migration to urban areas, he added.
