An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted the town of Bairam in southern Fars Province Saturday morning, the provincial Seismological Center affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University reported. According to IRNA, no reports of casualties or damage to property were reported. Iran straddles several major faults and is prone to frequent earthquakes. In August 2012, two quakes in northwestern Iran claimed the lives of 306 people and injured more than 4500 others. The deadliest quake struck in June 1990 measuring 7.7 in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan, in which nearly 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured.
