A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the northeastern province of Golestan in the early hours of Monday, injuring 34 and damaging several houses in nearby villages.
People rushed to the streets at 2 a.m. at the epicenter of the quake in Ramian County, east of Golestan Province, IRNA reported.
At 10 in the morning, an aftershock of magnitude 3.1 also hit the northeastern region, causing more panic. The initial quake damaged at least 50 houses in villages near the epicenter, causing power outages and landslides that blocked roads.
The quake had a depth of 9 km at its epicenter, University of Tehran’s Institute of Geophysics said. Tremors were felt across Golestan.
The province’s Red Crescent Society set up temporary shelters to accommodate those who had fled their homes. Some homes and buildings were completely leveled by the quake.
Ramian County has a population of 85,000.
“Reconstruction efforts will begin by next week,” Ramian’s Governor Hamidreza Choubdari said.
