Hamedan unveiled its first tourist bus early this week to promote tourism in the historical city.

“Unlike Tehran where imported open-top tour buses were in service (albeit for only two weeks, after which the service was stopped for unknown reasons), Hamedan officials had to get creative by repurposing an intra-city bus,” Mohammad Pourvakhshuri, a deputy at Hamedan Municipality, said.

The bus had its roof removed, a cooling system installed and was equipped with a free Wi-Fi network and smartphone battery chargers, ILNA reported.

“The bus has been painted red, similar to ‘hop-on hop-off’ buses elsewhere,” he said.

Pourvakhshuri said the conversion of the bus has cost one billion rials ($2,600). An experienced tour guide will be onboard to introduce the city’s attractions.

Those interested in sightseeing in Hamedan will be able to purchase tickets at hotels, schools and travel agencies. Ticket prices have not yet been set. If the scheme proves popular, city officials will increase the fleet to five or six.

Hamedan, the capital of Hamedan Province, is believed to be among the oldest Iranian cities, possibly dating back to 1100 BC. Its main attractions are Ganj Nameh Inscription and the tombs of renowned polymath Avicenna and famous poet Baba Taher.
