Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says Tehran and Islamabad should step up their cooperation in the fight against terrorism to foil US plots.

“Our relations should become stronger because the Americans are seeking to disturb peace in the region and terrorism is spreading,” Larijani said during a meeting with Pakistan’s Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani in Tehran on Wednesday, IRNA reported.

The Iranian official also called for increased economic ties between the two countries.

“However, there are still certain obstacles in the way of expanding such cooperation, which Pakistan has to remove,” Larijani added.

Rabbani, who attended a summit of parliamentary representatives from Islamic countries in the Iranian capital a day earlier, said Pakistan has been working toward the removal of banking obstacles so that bilateral trade can be increased.

He also said Pakistan is being used as a “scapegoat” by the United States to deflect attention away from its ineffective measures to curb terror in the region, adding that efforts should be made to strengthen Tehran-Islamabad security ties.
