In a message to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the UN secretary general appealed to Iran to help promote security and stability in Lebanon.

UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly handed in the message of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, which was addressed to the foreign minister, in a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran on Sunday, IRNA reported.

In the message, the UN chief has asked Iran to take measures to push ahead the election of president in Lebanon to help maintain stability in the troubled Arab country. The two officials discussed the latest developments in Lebanon, particularly the political and security issues facing the country.

Plumbly highlighted the importance of stability in Lebanon and praised Iran for playing a key role to bring peace to the country.

Amir-Abdollahian, for his part, expressed Iran’s willingness to cooperate with the UN to bring peace and stability to the region and said, “It is Iran’s principled policy to support security and national unity in Lebanon. Iran spares no effort to this end.”

On the election of president, he said Iran favors the Lebanese people’s choice and the parliament’s decision in this regard.  The deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs stressed the need for a UN-led international campaign to root out terrorism.
