Iraq’s Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri took up his Iranian counterpart’s invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony for President Hassan Rouhani slated for August 5.

In a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari in Baghdad on Sunday, Jabouri said he will travel to Tehran to attend Rouhani’s swearing-in ceremony in the Iranian Parliament, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He also voiced the Iraqi Parliament’s support for the efforts of the governments of Tehran and Baghdad for closer relations.

Jabouri and Ansari discussed the latest regional developments and the situation in Iraq, with both emphasizing the need of preserving Iraqi unity and territorial integrity, and calling for concerted action against terrorism and extremism.

The Iranian diplomat briefed the Iraqi speaker on the results of the meeting of the Iran-Iraq Political Commission held earlier in the day.

Ansari had traveled to Iraq for a new round of the commission’s meeting.
