Official figures show national power consumption is down by 6,000 megawatts. By the end of summer, power consumption was at 42,154 megawatts at its peak on Saturday. This hot summer in Iran witnessed a record high power consumption of 48,527 megawatts on July 26. Evaporative coolers have been blamed as the major cause of high consumption during the summer time. Despite the country’s capacity to produce over 72,000 megawatts of electricity, there were regular power outages in the capital Tehran and some other large cities during the summer period.
