Rural areas in Iran have better access to sanitation facilities, 15% higher than the global average, said Dr. Kazem Nadafi, head of Health Ministry’s center for environmental and occupational health.

Some 64% of rural people have access to sanitation while the global average is 49%, IRNA reported.

Better coordination to improve rural community health is our main goal, said Nadafi.

About 25% of health care facilities are provided by the ministry and the rest are funded through inter-sector collaboration.

Access to healthy and safe drinking water, easy access to restrooms and adequate sewage disposal systems are among the most important indicators of the Health Equity Index (HEI).

“At present, 91.9% of rural people have access to safe drinking water and we hope the remaining will benefit in the near future,” Nadafi added.

In the past 2-3 years 50,000 restrooms have been constructed in different villages in the country, said Iravani Manesh, director general of Imam Khomeini Relief Committee.

Health education, improvement of sanitation services, creating self-sufficiency and distribution of food baskets are among the most important measures of support given by the committee in the villages.
