US President Joe Biden is bound to deliver on his campaign promise to rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal that his predecessor Donald Trump illegally quit, Iranian president said.
“If Biden shows the slightest laxity in implementing the JCPOA, he has betrayed the American people’s vote,” President Hassan Rouhani said in a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President.ir reported.
He used the abbreviation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the formal name of the deal between Iran and world powers, which placed curbs on Iran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of international sanctions.
The United States, however, withdrew in 2018 under Trump, who wished to reach a more comprehensive deal with Iran through maximum economic pressure.
Rouhani said Trump’s measures against the Iranian nation went far beyond sanctions or even war, and amounted to “full-scale terrorism”.
“What war do you know of in which the supply of medicine for patients is disrupted?”
Iran has scaled down its commitments in response to the reimposition of American sanctions, but declared that all moves could be reversed as soon as JCPOA economic rewards were restored.
Biden later came to power in January with a pledge to return to the agreement, but that has not happened yet.
“The new US administration repeatedly called Trump’s exit from the JCPOA a wrong move in its electoral campaign and admitted to the futility of anti-Iran sanctions, but Trump’s crime and economic terrorism against Iran still continue,” Rouhani said.
Indirect negotiations are currently underway in Vienna, Austria, to see if both sides can agree to resume full compliance.
Iran demands a full removal of sanctions before it makes verifications and then re-implements its commitments.
Despite significant progress in six rounds of talks, a final agreement has not been reached yet as both sides now need to make important political decisions.
Tehran says it has made and declared its decision and is waiting for the other sides to do so.

Baseless Accusations

Western countries now express concern about possible military aspects to Iran’s nuclear program in view of the country’s considerable developments since it began reducing compliance with the JCPOA.
Rouhani reiterated that Iran has never been after weapons of mass destruction and its nuclear activities are completely peaceful.
“Accusations against Iran are baseless and reasonless and the JCPOA is a document that shows Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons,” he said.
He also stressed that his administration has not been negligent in implementing the JCPOA, nor trying to have the sanctions removed, and has used any opportunity toward this end.
Although the Iranian nation suffered a lot, they resisted this terrorism successfully and can now reclaim their inalienable rights if certain issues are resolved, according to the president.
Rouhani will soon be handing the government over to president-elect Ebrahim Raeisi, a conservative who does not seem to favor relations with the West.
Nevertheless, the government spokesman says the government will not rush to conclude a deal in its final days.
“If what we desire is not fulfilled by the end of this administration’s term, the [next] government will take over the talks,” Ali Rabiei said.
