The United States opposes the planned Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline that would connect Russia and Germany, believing it would undermine Europe’s energy security, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Saturday. “Like Poland, the United States opposes the Nord Stream-2 pipeline. We see it as undermining Europe’s overall energy security and stability,” he said at a press conference in Warsaw, Reuters reported. Poland hopes the US will offer political support for the republic in counteracting the Nord Stream-2 project, Polish Foreign Minister Yacek Czaputowicz told a joint news conference following a meeting between Tillerson and Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Saturday. The Nord Stream-2 pipeline is expected to come into service at the end of 2019. The pipeline is set to run from the Russian coast along the Baltic Sea bed to the German shore. Each of the pipeline’s two stretches will have a capacity of 27.5 billion cubic meters.
