Close to 178 billion cubic meters of natural gas were consumed in the nine months that roughly coincides with March and December, 6.6% higher compared with the same period of the previous year.

According to Saeed Momeni, the deputy for gas distribution at the National Iranian Gas Company, industrial and residential sectors as well as power stations burned around 167 billion cubic meters of gas in the same period of last year, Shana reported.

“Supplies were chiefly used for electricity generation,” he said.

Iran has the capacity to produce upwards of 800 million cubic meters a day of gas, but most of its output is used to meet the domestic demand.

Iran also supplies around 40 mcm/d of gas to Turkey and Iraq. Data show the oil- and gas-rich country is among the world’s top five consumers of the clean fossil fuel.
