South Pars 400-kilovolt gas-insulated substation is expected to become operational in May, an official of Pars Oil and Gas Company said.

"The GIS substation, registered a work-in-progress rate of 80%, will help provide the much-needed electricity for South Pars 2 region refineries, including phases 12, 13, 14, 19, 22, 23 and 24," Mohammad Mehdi Tavassolipour was also quoted as saying by Shana on Tuesday.

A GIS uses superior dielectric gas and sulfur hexaflouride at moderate pressure for insulation. It is mostly used where space is expensive or not available. In a GIS, the active parts are protected from the deterioration from exposure to atmospheric air, moisture and contamination.

According to the official, a 400-kV power transmission line has already been completed in the region and as soon as the substation goes on stream, the 400- kV electricity that comes from South Pars 1 gas-fueled power plant will be converted to 132-Kv before its distribution in the refineries.

A substation reduces the high voltage of power transmission to suitable voltage for supply to consumers. The hot and dry climate in Yazd is ideal for harvesting solar energy.

"By the time the facility becomes operational, power demand in South Pars 2 region will be met with the help of a separate 132-Kv power line that is fed by the gas-powered station in Pars 1 region," Tavassolipour said, adding that the completion of the under construction 500-megawatt combined-cycle power plant in Asalouyeh will boost electricity generation capacity to 1,500 MW.

The official said the new power plant will feed the GIS substation and South Pars 2 region's power demand will be addressed effectively.

  Asalouyeh Power Plant

According to the official, operations to complete the Asalouyeh combined cycle power plant in southern Iran have gained fresh impetus following the allocation of resources.

"The venture has registered a work-in-progress rate of 65%, of which 30% have been achieved in the last six months," he said, adding that the process of manufacturing components has gathered momentum since domestic and foreign producers have been provided with financial incentives.

A combined-cycle power plant produces up to 50% more electricity from the same fuel than a traditional simple-cycle plant. The waste heat from the gas turbine is routed to the nearby steam turbine that generates extra power.

"POGC has placed orders for turbines and generators," he said, noting that water desalination units are being installed.

Pointing to heat recovery steam generators, the official said, "Key part of theses boilers have been manufactured by an international company and they are being imported. The under construction plant will supply power to phases 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 21 refineries.

Tavassolipour noted that refining complexes in South Pars 2 region, including phases 12, 13, 14, 19, 22, 23 and 24, will also rely on the new power plant in emergency cases.

Comprising 24 phases, South Pars is the world's largest gas field shared by Iran and Qatar in the Persian Gulf. Iran is now drawing around 500 million cubic meters per day of natural gas from the joint field with the Arab state's output reportedly at 650-700 mcm/d.
