Iran on Thursday broke ground for a wind farm in the south which will be built in cooperation with the German company eab New Energy GmbH.

The first phase of the project, with electricity production capacity of 50 megawatts, is planned to be completed in Arvand Free Zone in two years, Mehr News Agency reported.

The Germans will reportedly fund the project's first phase which is said to cost $80 million.

Arvand Free Zone is a 155 square-kilometer industrial area that surrounds Khorramshahr, Abadan, and Minoo Island along the Shatt al-Arab waterway in southern Khuzestan Province.

The wind farm is part of a $350-million agreement with eab New Energy to produce up to 200 MW of electricity harnessing wind energy in the region's expansive open lands.

According to Mehr, the German company will install several wind turbines in the region each with a power production capacity of 3-4 megawatts.

Eab is an international service provider and contractor for wind farms, solar installations and other projects using renewable resources. It has implemented renewable projects worldwide with a total output capacity of 660 MW.

Iran's installed power production capacity is more than 75,000 MW, but output from renewables hardly reaches 250 MW. According to published reports, plans call for raising the capacity to 300 MW by 2018.
