The offshore platform for gas extraction from Phase 20 of South Pars Gas Field in the Persian Gulf, installed on November 13, will be fully operational by the middle of next February in line with plans to boost gas production from the giant joint field, director of phases 20 and 21 at Pars Oil and Gas Company said on Sunday.

“The platform, which weighs 2,600 tons, has the capacity to extract 29 million cubic meters of natural gas per day,” Alireza Ebadi was quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.

“Phase 21 platform, installed on July 22, will also become fully operational in a week,” Ebadi added, noting that phases 20 and 21 of South Pars have been developed at a cost of $4.5 billion.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, covering an area of 3,700 square kilometers of Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. It adjoins Qatar’s North Field, which measures 6,000 square kilometers.

Underscoring that the design and construction of the two platforms were carried out by Iranian engineers, Ebadi said phases 20 and 21 will produce 57 million cubic meters of gas per day, 1 million tons of ethane for petrochemical companies, 1 million tons of high-quality liquefied gas for export, 400 tons of sulfur and 75,000 barrels of gas condensates per day. On the development of onshore gas refining facilities for the two phases, Ebadi said the refineries have made 90% physical progress.
