Tehran’s elected city councilors were among the guests at the opening of the data center.

Privately-owned Internet service provider AsiaTech, inaugurated a national data center in western Tehran on Saturday.

The center, located at the base of Tehran’s iconic Milad Tower, will offer data services to several thousand  neew customers, Mehr News reported on Sunday.

AsiaTech, as well as other Internet providers like Shatel have previously complained that Iran’s old telecoms infrastructure is struggling with growing demand of new users.

Applying for those services meant waiting weeks for space to open up for the ISP to offer access.

The CEO of AsiaTech, Mohammad Ali Yousefizadeh, said at the opening of the new site, “we created this center due to the unprecedented growth in the number of Internet users in Iran.”

Milad Tower complex was chosen as the location for the center due to its proximity to several inter-connecting freeways and access to users in western part of the crowded metropolis.

The data center site covers an area of 700 square meters.

AsiaTech, was voted the best ISP in Tehran in 2016 according to previous reports.

Traditional ISP’s have faced an increasing number of competitors in recent years since the introduction of 4G Internet services.

Companies like Mobinnet and MTN-Irancell now offer packages similar to fixed line operators.
