Some $60 million worth of tilapia were imported into Iran in the last fiscal year that ended on March 20, 2017, the head of Iran’s Union of Seafood Reproduction, Cultivation and Exports said.
“The figure indicates close to 20% increase compared with the year before,” Arsalan Qasemi was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency.
The rise in imports came despite the increase in import tariffs to 32% last year from 26% the year before.
According to Qasemi, tilapia rivals the Iranian trout in the domestic market and its excessive import is taking a toll on local fish farmers.
