Iran has exported $107 million worth of handicrafts from its customs terminals since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 21), the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said.

The true volume of exports should be much higher than the stated figure, as it does not take into account suitcase trade of handicrafts.

"Last year, more than $280 million worth of handicrafts were exported through official ports of exits and $250 million were exported via suitcase trade," IRNA also quoted Ali Asghar Mounesan as saying.

Noting that growth in handicraft exports is a sign of a more dynamic tourism industry, the official said, more than five million tourists visited Iran last year and, so far this year more than three million tourists have travelled to the country.
