Kenyan farmers rearing sheep and cultivating onions on a large scale will soon be exporting to Iran.
In a new deal signed between Kenya and Iran, about 40-50 tons of sheep meat and 10,000 tons of onion will be exported per month, Uko.co.ke reported.
In addition, tea from the country will also be exported to the Iranian market.
The monthly deal worth around $6 million was signed by Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and Iranian Ambassador Jafar Barmaki on March 8.
Mutua welcomed the move, saying it will maximize market opportunities for farmers and traders. He said the deal is significant to the country's economy, welcoming the Iran House of Innovation and Technology Center's initiative to help Kenyan startups.
"We promised to minimize the bureaucracy that led to Iran's withdrawal of KSh40 million [$308,000], which was earmarked to support Kenyan universities for research. We hope to get the funds recommitted," he said in a tweet.
This will see Iran join countries fighting for a larger share of Kenya’s export market.
