Iran and Uzbekistan recently signed 17 agreements to boost cooperation in agriculture, energy, customs, technology, environment, tourism, business, visas and science, according to a press release from Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

The ministry also mentioned an agreement to work together on transportation via Iran’s Chabahar Port in the Sea of Oman.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Uzbekistan last week with the goal of improving relations with the Central Asian country.

Iran has been prioritizing relations with Central Asian states recently. Last month, Iran announced a major increase in trade with Turkmenistan. In June, Iran and Kazakhstan inaugurated a new rail network to boost Eurasian trade.

The agreements exemplify Iran’s efforts to enhance foreign interest in Chabahar Port. The Islamic Republic has also sought Chinese and Indian investments in the port recently.

In 2020, Iran exported $103 million worth of goods to Uzbekistan, while Uzbekistan’s exports reached $137 million to Iran. This was out of a total of $10.8 billion worth of Iranian exports and $25.3 billion worth of imports that year, according to the US-based Observatory of Economic Complexity. The organization has yet to release data for 2021, Al-Monitor reported.
