A total of 72,920 industrial and mineral units were active in Iran as of the current fiscal year’s seventh month (Sept. 23-Oct. 22), which employed 2.59 million people, of which 1,911 units with 131,639 employees were in the free and special zones.
According to latest data released by the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade, Tehran Province topped the list with 8,835 units that employed 411,560 people. It was followed by Isfahan with 8,650 units and 274,132 jobs and Khorasan Razavi with 5,476 units and 204,857 jobs.
North Khorasan with 338 units and 13,292 jobs, Ilam with 491 units and 10,013 jobs and South Khorasan with 496 active units and 11,712 jobs came last.
Units engaged in production of non-metallic mineral products, food and beverages, as well as rubber and plastic account for the highest share of industrial and mining products, providing an aggregate of 903,000 jobs.
The lowest share was registered for "water supply, treatment and distribution" with two units, "energy production" with 12 units and "sewage, waste disposal, environmental health and other similar activities" with 19 units. These units employed a total of 585 people.
The active units located in free and special areas only accounted for 2.6% of the total number of units.
