The 9th Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival (DTLA), held Sept. 21-30, granted its Female Pioneer Award to Iranian movie director Shiva Sanjari for her documentary biopic ‘Here the Seats Are Vacant’.

The 60-minute documentary is about an old Iranian director and actress who now lives in a village far from any association with her past. It shows the metamorphosis of her life, from fame to obscurity and where no one knows her, Mehr News Agency reported.

Sanjari, 37, studied graphic design and visual art at Tehran branch of Azad University. So far, she has shown her works at exhibitions and art galleries around the world.

She started making video arts and audio works in 2012. Then, in the same year, she moved to filmmaking and made some documentaries.

Set in one of the defining urban centers of the world, DTLA Film Festival has as its mission to exhibit a wide array of independent film and filmmakers from throughout the US and abroad with a primary focus on those that explore the history, architecture, cultural diversity and contemporary social and political issues of the modern urban landscape.
