Iran was announced the host of the fourth edition of the West Asian Games (WAG) in 2016 at the 66th meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) executive board held in Tehran on Thursday.

The OCA is a governing body of sports in Asia, currently with 45 member national Olympic committees, with its headquarters located in Kuwait City, Kuwait. The current president is Kuwait’s Sheikh Fahad Al-Sabah, MNA reported.

WAG is a multi-sport event held every 4 years among athletes from West Asia. Its members include Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen, and the UAE.

The WAG was first organized in Tehran in 1997. The success of the competition led to the creation of the West Asian Games Federation (WAGF) with the objective of hosting the games every 4 years.
