Only 16% of children between the ages of five to 11 have been vaccinated against the highly contagious coronavirus across the country, health deputy of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Javad Hosseini, warned on Saturday.
“Vaccination of this age group is extremely important since it’s said that a possible new peak of Covid-19 can hit in the next three months,” Hosseini was quoted as saying by ISNA.
According to him, Iran will not fully escape the dangerous virus until at least 75% of its population have been administered the third booster shot.
Iran began rolling out Covid vaccines in the winter of 2021. So far, it has given out over 150 million jabs to its population of around 85 million.
Some 27.6 million people have received the third booster dose to further immunize their body against the respiratory disease and a majority have refused to get the booster.
The Health Ministry announced on Sunday that only one Covid patient died in the past 24 hours throughout the country, raising the national toll to 141,350.
At least 160 contracted the virus on the same day and 23 were hospitalized. Over 7.2 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
