A computer programming team from Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology won a bronze medal during the 43rd round of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC 2019). The contest was held in Portugal from March 31-April 5.
The event brought together 135 teams from around the world, giving them five hours to solve 12 computer programming problems in English.
Based on the rules, the more problems the teams solve in the defined period, the higher ranking they get. The best 12 teams received awards.
According to the event website, icpc.baylor.edu, Sharif University took the 9th place and won bronze by solving seven problems. The team was selected as the best-performing participant from West Asia.
Two more Iranian teams from Amir Kabir and Shahid Beheshti universities made an appearance in the event, with respectively four and zero solved problems.
Participants in the global event were prize-winning coders in regional competitions held earlier.
In December 2018, Sharif University of Technology hosted a regional coding competition between 880 teams from West Asia in Tehran. Programmers from the host university outperformed other participants in the contest.
Rules and Awards
During the global event, the contestants were asked to submit problem solutions as computer programs in C, C++, Java, Python or Kotlin programming languages.
They were required to foster collaboration, creativity, innovation and the ability to perform under pressure.
At ICPC, four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals were awarded.
Gold medal winners were Moscow State University with 10 solved problems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Tokyo both with 9 solved problems and the University of Warsaw with 8 solved problems. They were respectively ranked 1st to 4th.
ICPC is the premier global programming competition, annually bringing together 10,000 participants from 103 countries.
The awards ceremony on April 5 featured an announcement that Moscow will be the next host of the ICPC in 2020.
