At least 100,000 tons of red meat is lost in the supply chain in Iran on a yearly basis, FAO Representative in Iran Serge Nakouzi said.

Studies commissioned by the Food and Agriculture Organization estimated annual global food loss and waste by quantity at roughly 30% of cereals, 40–50% of root crops, fruits and vegetables, 20% of oilseeds, meat and dairy products, and 35% of fish, the FAO website reported.

According to the findings, currently in Iran the average per capita consumption of meat is 35.5 kg, comprising 12.5 kg of red meat and 23 kg of poultry meat.

The FAO also said in low and middle-income countries,  food loss results from wide-ranging managerial and technical limitations in harvesting techniques, storage, transportation, processing, cooling facilities, infrastructure, packaging and marketing systems.
