Iran’s Ambassador to Turkey Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian and Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, held talks on a range of issues, including ways of boosting relations between the two neighboring countries. In the meeting on Monday, the Iranian diplomat pointed to a recent failed coup attempt in Turkey and congratulated the Turkish people on their victory against the coup plotters. “The era of coups has expired and the people of the region will not allow the use of force to defeat democracy,” he said, according to Tasnim News Agency. Referring to Tehran-Ankara relations, Taherian highlighted the recent agreements between Iranian and Turkish presidents to promote economic ties, particularly by setting the goal of $30 billion bilateral trade, and said measures are being taken to facilitate economic cooperation between the two countries. Kilicdaroglu pointed to numerous commonalities between Iran and Turkey, saying that his party is keen on enhancing ties between the two sides.
