MTN Irancell, Iran’s second biggest mobile phone operator, has tested its infrastructure for providing Voice over LTE services.

According to Mehr News Agency, the test was a success and Irancell is ready to provide the service.

The scheme was devised as a result of operators seeking a standardized system for transferring traffic for VoLTE. It is voice calls over a 4G LTE network, rather than 2G or 3G connections that are usually used.

Most users tend to think of 4G as mostly being about downloading, streaming and web browsing, and indeed that is primarily what it has been used for so far, but it can also be used to improve calls.

One of the main benefits of using this service would be better call quality. The main advantage of VoLTE is that call quality is superior to 3G or 2G connections as far more data can be transferred over 4G than the older alternatives: up to three times as much as 3G and six times as much as 2G.

This will make it easier to make what the person on the other end of the line is saying, as well as their tone of voice. It can essentially be referred to as an HD voice call.

VoLTE also improves coverage and connectivity, as it can connect calls twice as fast as the current methods.

Since 2G and 3G connections will still be available when there is no 4G signal, it simply means that there is greater mobile coverage overall.

Some of the frequencies that 4G operate on, such as the 800 MHz spectrum, have far greater reach than 2G or 3G spectrums, so users will be able to get a signal further away from a mast or in buildings that other signals struggle to penetrate.
