Russian tariffs have increased the price of Iran’s citrus exports by 20%, intensifying the competition in the neighboring country’s lucrative market, says the head of Mazandaran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Abdollah Mohajer. The northern Mazandaran Province is expected to produce an exportable surplus of 500,000 tons of citrus fruits, including oranges, tangerines and kiwis, in the current Iranian year (March 2016-17), IRNA quoted Mohajer as saying.
Last month, Mazandaran Post Office has launched a new service to deliver agricultural products across the country. AgroPost facilitates the shipment of crops cultivated in the province, thereby eliminating the role of middlemen in the supply chain.
According to the director general of Mazandaran Post Office, Esmaeil Boudaghi, the services are currently available for rice and citrus fruits, but will be later expanded to include other fruits.
Over 70 kinds of agricultural produce are grown in Mazandaran that meets 40% of domestic demand for rice and 50% of citrus fruits. However, it is the sole domestic supplier of kiwi.
