Activities in Shahid Rajaei Port over the 11 months to February 18 increased 35% compared with last year’s corresponding period, the head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization said. “Loading and unloading of cargo, exports, trans-shipment and container handling increased by 34%, 51%, 80% and 35% respectively over the period,” Mohammad Saeednejad was also quoted as saying by Mehr News Agency. The Saeednejad noted that after the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, came into effect in January 2016, PMO was able to purchase the equipment needed for port development at reasonable prices. “Part of the purchased equipment will be delivered to us in the next four months,” he said. Shahid Rajaei Port is Iran’s biggest container port at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz. Together with Imam Khomeini Port in the south of the country, it accounts for 80% of the total throughput of Iranian ports, which is 140 million tons per year.
